12/11/2019 0 Comments Mindful Tips for Teachers: Tip #4Tip #4 Three Deep Breaths Today’s tip is about self-regulation. You know those days when the students are very talkative, a parent is upset with you, admin called an unscheduled meeting and a fire drill? Those days seem to happen a lot during the school year. When events happen in our environment that cause us stress, our bodies first response is to hold our breath. We are often holding our breath or breathing very shallow without even realizing it. This shallow breath causes us to stay in “flight, fight or freeze” mode. This means that an old trauma has been triggered and our brain has gone into the survival state. By changing our breath we can change our brain state.
Three deep belly breaths will allow time for the brain to reset and you will be able to focus on the solutions rather than the problem. The pause will give you time to see what is really happening in the moment instead of the story that goes with the old trauma. I encourage you to try this practice and teach it to your students. You can help your students learn how to self regulate as well. Please leave a comment below to let me know how this works for you or you can reach out to me on Facebook and Instagram. AuthorHi! Thank you for joining me on this journey. After spending 30 years in education, I'm writing my next chapter. This blog is a journey through that next chapter as I explore myself and the world around me. I write about mindfulness, how it has supported my life and how it can support you as well. My wish for you is to take what you need and leave the rest. Archives
